More than just your average bar, it's an experience. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable, and when she found out it was our first time, she was more than willing to go over the expansive whiskey list and craft cocktail list. We ordered up a couple of Moscow Mules, along with two burgers and had a really enjoyable evening. Definitely in the realm of different at Butter Run, which is great, we can't all be a TGI-Friday's...right?! Friends of mine will sometimes chose Butter Run for our gatherings, and I'll be more than happy to attend again. Oh, and our food was really great. Two great burgers, cooked to our specifications. I had the Gwennie burger...with green olives....delish!

This place was straight down the middle. There was nothing about it that made me think it was great. Apparently, they have a large whiskey selection and that's cool. I had a cocktail and it was "Meh." The food was not bad, but it wasn't exactly the best in the world either. Especially for what we paid for it. I was not too impressed with this establishment. I feel like they have a sweet environment and good idea, but they just aren't quite there. You guys need SOMETHING. You need to WOW me. Rare foods? Insane portions? Peanut shells on the floors or something, I don't know, but you gotta do something. You can't have a bar that has such a great atmosphere, location, and decor be so bland. I will be back in the future and I will give you another chance. I hope you guys can really figure something out.

Get the escargot. It's better than any fine dining restaurant. They are smaller with plenty on the plate and served with a nice piece of toast.

Fantastic! Just finished lunch here with my mom. We both got the1/2 sandwich soup combo. I got the turkey ( I'm obsessed!!!) it was so delicious with the cranberry walnut bread.... And the BEEFBARLEY soup!!!! It was divine!!!! Best I've ever had The service was great and I love how it looks inside!! This is my new favorite spot! Will def be back!

The young "bro" bartender is a real piece of work. When you can actually get his attention, when he's not flirting with his coworkers, he's just rude and makes you really want to leave. Small, local bars should really think about getting some more friendly employees. Not some "bro" who thinks he's the man. It was my first time in there in over 6 months and I really couldn't believe he's still employed there. Guess I'll hope for a different outcome in another couple months before I step foot back in here. Good selection, average food, terrible service.

I love this place and need to go more. Great beer selection and the food is great. Again, the atmosphere is top notch. I've never had slow service and the employees are always pleasant!

Sadly I'm updating my review with no so great info. In the numerous times I have been back to Butter Run the service has increasingly gotten worse. I think last night was by far the worse. The food and drinks are still great but the service.....you'd be better off serving yourself. Our waitress tonight was so slow and just not all together. I sure hope this trend ends and takes swing in a better direction.

Stopped in last night for a drink and something to eat, wife needed a cup of their beef barley soup which is outstanding and I had the half sandwich with a cup of chili, they give you a choice of sandwiches and wasn't sure which to choose so asked Jen our server and she recommended the roast turkey on toasted cranberry bread with cranberry relish... Crazy good The servers are always friendly, the food is outstanding for a corner joint, the beer is always cold and the prices are super reasonable can't ask for anything more

Real food! No lunch meat! Roasted turkey. Cooked to perfection corn beef. Club is super! Love the turkey w/ cranberry relish, cranberry nut bread sooo very good! Reuben & corn beef sandwich yum! Steak fries well done are worth it. :)

I love this place! It's a great neighborhood bar with an incredible whiskey selection. They don't have a ton of draft beers but there's enough craft brews that I'm always able to find something on tap to interest me. The food selection isn't extensive, but everything they have is extremely well done, my favorite is their brisket style corned beef sandwich. I highly recommend giving this place a try.

Did you know they serve breakfast Saturdays & Sundays? Yes, they do and it's pretty darned good, ;). This is a great neighborhood bar with good food, good service and great drink selections (as noted) ... it has that kind of "Cheers" atmosphere about it. Parking is a little tricky when they're busy, but if you haven't been, you should go, :).

  • Sherry S.

2 stars for the location, otherwise I would say none, parking is horrible and bartenders do not engage in any talk at all while you are siting at bar, not a very fun place, no keno ,barely move around in there.

Any e-mail titled, "22 Best Bourbon Bars in the Country" has a guaranteed 100% open rate in my inbox. Vodka might be my wife, but bourbon is most definitely my sexy mistress. Scroll list... Scroll list... Scroll list... WHAT?! Now I expected Kentucky and other southern state shout outs, but I'll be damned... St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The place of my birth and less than a mile from my grandparents' house. Sounds like as good of an excuse as any to pay gma and gpa a visit. The food that I saw (and somewhat sampled) seemed average at best, but the bourbon menu? Solid. And extremely reasonably priced. The Basil Basil cocktail I ordered was strong and delicious. But not strong enough to prevent me from ordering a Four Roses Small Batch on the rocks. Holla! In other news, I loved the atmosphere here, but was less than satisfied with the wait staff's knowledge of the various whiskey offerings. If you're one of the best bourbon bars in the country, your servers should probably know a thing or two about your drink menu, but she was super sweet, so I forgive her. And let's be honest, after two of their drinks, I could have cared less if she told me there was no corn in their bourbon. Butter Run (great story behind the name by the way), I just might be planning a few extra trips to see my grandparents on your account.

Ordered a pint of bud light and it was warm so I mentioned it to the waitress and she told me that the draft beers are warm.....place sucks hole avoid

Incredible wings. Give me a try with a basket of their fries. I'm hooked. Nice beer selection. Better whiskey selection.

Well, an employee reached out to me, and told me to take my extra star back, so.... No problem! I aim to please... In my prior review: I complained that their menus are in three ring binders, unprofessional! I complained that they have a badass popcorn machine that should be an awesome draw to their bar, but they choose to store menus in it instead, unprofessional! I complained about the quality of beer on their "craft beer list", unprofessional! And I complained about the quality of their food, again unprofessional! Then one of their employees reaches out to me, and has this to say: "Thank you for bumping us up a star however you can just keep it. I have read reviews by you about several different places and you are rarely happy and extremely hard to please. You should just cook and drink at home so everything Will B (pun intended) "perfect". You don't like how a menu is presented......as long as the food on that menu is good it really doesn't matter what the menu looks like especially in a saloon! You mentioned the popcorn machine.....well we are truly sorry that your visits were ruined because there are items in a popcorn machine that doesn't get used anyway. I'm sure that reflects on how your food and drink is going to turn out. You don't have to like our place but we and alot of others love it. Just don't come back if it's so bad for you.....please!! Because quite frankly I'm sick of you bashing us!!! Thank you and have a wonderful day." I'm really not that hard to please. I absolutely love Sai Thai, Little Z's, and Achatz Burgers and Fries in St Clair Shores, all within a couple miles of this place, but the east side has very few, quality food/service options, especially south of Hall road. Wise guys (just up the Street on Harper) does a pretty good job for bar food. What this guy fails to address is that fact that it wasn't just the presentation and storage of the menu that I didn't like, the food actually sucked too. Like I said, the baked potato was a warmed-over, hard, soggy mess, the "house made" raspberry vinaigrette was thick and awful, and the iced tea was gross. Sorry if I don't want your cooked 4-6 hour ago baked potato, your bad dressing, or your bad tea, sorry you hide from negative aspects about your food, by picking on smaller items in my review, but I'm most sorry for your lack of professionalism, which is what I have referenced in EVERY SINGLE REVIEW I HAVE MADE about this place, then you reach out to me and prove me right yet again, unprofessional! Have no worries, I'll never set foot in there again, and I travel in groups. I'm actually the one that suggested we give it another try last time I was in there, and brought 3 people with me. Never again, not if 20 people want to go and I'm the only dissenter, I'll walk to somewhere with better food and service. You say that "some people" like your garbage? Good for you, and like I said in my prior review, literally ALL of those people are over 50. No one under 30 comes here, that is, no one with actively working tastebuds comes here, and for good reason. Keep rejecting constructive criticism, and keep running people away from your establishment, and tell me how it works for you... Everyone else on that corner has failed in recent history, I don't expect anything different for you. Ha, how'd that whiskey tasting "charity event" go for you guys last week at Barister Gardens? I'll tell you how it went, thousands of people invited 2 confirmed on Facebook, and less than 10 groupons for the event were purchased. It was a huge bust, again, another unprofessional venture from your less than professional owner/manager. Maybe I'll like the next place that buys the joint.

We drove around tonight trying to find a new place to check out since we had a baby sitter, and I remember my bestie telling me about this place and their amazing onion rings. We decided to give it a try. First impression was odd, it is teeny tiny and so is the menu, all they have are a few burgers, a few sandwiches, like 3 salads and some apps. However, the food was AMAZING! I had a club sandwich and my hubs had the steak that was on special (with the onion rings of course!). The sandwich was to die for! No deli meats there, it had real roasted turkey and real roasted ham, like thick slabs. Turns out everything is homemade from scratch, It is a total neighborhood hangout but is really cool. We will def go back. If you want a laid back evening with AMAZING bar food, definitely check it out.

The bartenders are clueless . Their " whiskey expert " didn't know how to make a hot toddy . My friend and I ordered them and the gentleman sitting next to us had to coach her from his bar stool. I didn't eat here , perhaps if I had , I would give this place one less star .

High class prices with a low class wait staff. The food is standard bar food, nothing special.

My friends and I decided to check this bar out and I am glad we did. Our drinks and food were delish and affordable for what we ordered also our servers were friendly and pretty fast and the bar itself was clean with cute decor. Nice selection of Whiskeys and they had a few bottled beers. This bar seems pretty laid back and I really liked the tin ceiling and cute vintage knick knacks in the tables and on the walls. I wish they had a jukebox but aside from that we had a good experience and we will be back.

DON'T READ THIS, if you like good food. Read this if you like top notch made onsite fresh awesome food! For starters I'd ordered beef barley soup, well they use dry-aged prime rib for the beef. Loaded with veggies and good lord I could talk all day about how good it was. Next were the hand battered toorder onion rings, these alone are worth the trip. Then the burger ohh the burger, a special blend done by Fairway Packing for them, hand patted on site ughhh slobber slobber. They also serve dry-aged Prime Rib dinners on Friday and Saturdays, yes I'm going back tonight. They serve over 50 single malt scotches and a ton of beers with about 20 on tap although the tap system is not yet up and running. So in conclusion don't go here, because I don't want to stand in line. LOL

Real food the corned beef sandwich is my favorite! Fantastic beer on tap! Friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff. I love going here for a beer and a burger lunch! I have made this my local favorite spot.

A little tip, this is a non-descript building right on the corner of Harper and 11 mile. Don't look for a sign and don't expect to find the right door to open on your first try, (it is located on the Harper side of the L shaped parking lot). Seriously, I needed a decoder ring to find the door to the place, but what they didn't spend on signage they made up for in bourbon. In this business we like to call this a win win. This saloon which earned it's moniker from the owner's childhood memory of his dad being sent on a butter run to the grocery store by his wife and stopping in for a few "pops" at the local bar on the way back. Which is a slight variation on my family whose is still waiting for my dad to return home from a run to Towne Club in 1983 (must have been a long line at the bottle return, but I digress). As mentioned it has an extensive bourbon/whiskey list, a nice number of beers on tap and great neighborhood feel to the place that I found welcoming even on the first time in. I have only gone during the week, so parking hasn't been bad, but it won't take much to fill the lot and I have heard it get's very loud on the weekend, but I had no problems during the week. Standard pub grub, nothing fancy. To Recap: The Good: Bourbon makes the world go round or least it makes my head swim enough that I think I feel the world going round, whatever I can walk to this place. The Bad: Get here early for parking, small lot and not a lot of great options around to accommodate it. The Band This Restaurant Most Resembles: Alabama Shakes, or at least that feeling the morning after.

We Found this place by accident a few weeks ago and WHAT a find!! Food was great!! And our bartender was awesome!! Think her name was Georgi?? It was a busy night however she was very patient with us. Took time to discuss whiskeys and sold us on the house blend!! Next time we are in the area this will be our first stop!!

BR is a welcome addition to the east side. It's a bar/saloon, so yes, its a bit louder than a traditional restaurant. I've been there for breakfast and dinner, both were very good. First, the breakfast. There was no menu, so ordered eggs and sausage. The meat is all homemade - and delicious. Coffee was made just right. For dinner, I've ordered the turkey sandwich on the cranberry/walnut bread and the buffalo chix sandwich, both very good - and satisfying. Did i mention the prices? A great value for any meal, i've never paid more than $25 for dinner, including drinks for two people.

We tried Butter Run Saloon, and I must say, I'm impressed. The drinks were good, very good cocktails, nice beer selection, weekend specials sound excellent, and a nice eclectic decor. The burger was good, tasty and cooked exactly as ordered and the onion rings are some of the best I've had. I'll definately be back for more.

Butter Run Saloon in St. Claire Shores was recomended to us a couple weeks ago. As fate would have it we did try the joint. Wow! The first thing we noticed was the amounts of whiskeys availble here. 100 plus types of scotch, 60 plus bourbons, and 40 plus irish whiskeys. Couple that with 15 beers on tap and we are talking good nights. The bar staff was amazing, not only were they knowledgeble about their booze, but super nice as well. (Thanks Breanna for another recomend) The old school saloon feel and energy was nice here. All draft pints were $5 except domestic. There is no special because they charge a fair price no matter the time or day! The burgers we tried were the BBQ and the Gwennie. BBQ is 1/3 lb fresh never frozen meat, bbq sauce, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion. Burger- 4 meat was flavorful, bacon not really Price- 3 Service- 5 , a first 5 ever! Overall- 4.5 Gwennie came 1/3 lb hand made never frozen meat, green olives and mayo. Burger- 3.5 Price- 3 Service- 5 Overall- 4.5 Butter run rocked the service. These girls made us feel right at home and were johnny on the spot with everything! I want to go back just to sit back in a saloon and try all that booze! When you are driving up to the joint, don't be looking for a sign or a tell to know your'e there, just go straight to the building that is on the corner with no discription at all!

i came here for dinner and lunch and both times i left there broke, and not so full. the prices are not reasonable at all, so if youre on a budget with your family stay at home. the food was greasy, quality bad and the owner totally strange with totally rude staff who cant even say thank you. im never coming here again.

Average food, but the prices are very reasonable. Unfortunately it was way too loud at 7pm, and very crowded--don't go here if you are expecting intimate and quiet surroundings. The corner where we sat was unlit, meaning I had to use a flashlight on my phone just to read a menu. Had to change tables since one of them was actually wobbling loose. The burgers were prepared as ordered, and the fries and onion rings were pretty good. We'll be back during a quieter time for a more relaxed meal, and hope we're not "in the dark" as we were last time. Overall we're glad to see another business open up on Harper, within walking distance of the house!

I have had the turkey sandwich many times now. It is like Thanksgiving on bread. The burger is easily in my top 3 of all time and they have great fries and fresh-battered onion rings. The beer prices are very fair and they have a wall of Scotches which is my drink of choice. This bar keeps getting better every time I go up there.

Really? What a let down...Went on a Saturday night at 8 pm. I will say it was great décor, however, the food left a lot to be desired. We went for burgers. My husband ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger, med rare. It was bone dry...I tried the Philly Steak, which again was very dry---I ended up using a lot of ketchup...really? The waitress seemed nice, however, when we received our food, she immediately apologized for our onion rings being over cooked. Really? Why would they serve sub-standard from the get go? Did I really need to actually complain about a simple side of onion rings being well done? Why did they leave it to me to complain knowing they were over cooked in the first place? Not once was I asked if I enjoyed my drinks and meal. Really? The owner (what I assumed was the owner, since he seemed to visit with every other table but mine) never addressed me or my husband even though he made his rounds throughout the dinning room. It wasn't until I was walking out did he address me with "Thank you" "Have a nice evening" Yes that was nice but it seemed very forced, not sincere in the least bit. It would have been nice if he would have acknowledged me as he did his other guests. All in all...I ate my food because I paid for it, not because I enjoyed it. Would I return? No. Not impressed. My kids can make dry burgers and burnt onion rings at home without me paying for it.

Once we found the in door service was friendly and a good selection though draft beer not installed. Atmosphere is warm with good music not too loud. A few tv's to watch the game. Sounds like some fun plans for drink specials coming soon. This new place deserves you stopping in to see for yourself.

Local bar with a local crowd. Had sandwiches for dinner and a few drinks. The service was great. The food was okay but standard bar fare. Fries were good. Small and cozy (some would say cramped). Parking can be challenging and is limited but since its a small place it's probably not a problem. Lots of draught beer. Sadly they didn't have Corona light.

    (3)
  • Amanda N.

Food was good. Great wings! I had higher hopes for this place as it is right a round the corner from me, but it's too small...the parking is tight and not enough spaces to accommodate...and it seems to appeal to an older crowd (50's+). We might try it again in the summer when we can walk to it and not have to worry about parking.

  • Heather C.

Make sure you see Gisele at the bar. They have the most extensive whiskey/bourbon selection in MI and as a whiskey drinking gal from FL, I really appreciated it! Great beer selection as well. Food was really good too...being from the south I'd say it was made with love. Can't wait to go back!
